A Look at the Data
In a recent study by Kelton Research, survey takers exposed some of the stigmas they hold, aimed at those with imperfect teeth. The survey was taken by 1,047 randomly selected U.S. residents, representative of the American population. The study consisted of showing a random assortment of images of men and women with both crooked and straight teeth, and the survey takers were asked to truthfully answer a series of questions.
The results are telling:
40 percent of Americans would not go out on a date with someone sporting crooked teeth. 38 percent would not go on a second date with such a person; compare that to the 23 percent who wouldn’t go on a second date with someone who lives with their parent. Yes, crooked teeth are considered less appealing than living with your parents.
Those with straight teeth are considered 45 percent more likely to land a job. The greater likelihood of being successful and wealthy is perceived to be at 58 percent.
Just under a third of survey takers claimed that the teeth are the first facial trait they’ll take notice of when first meeting someone, and a quarter of Americans think that the teeth are what they’ll most remember about someone.
Americans with straight teeth are 21 percent more likely to be perceived as happy, while 47 percent more likely to be seen as healthy and 38 percent more likely to be considered smart.
73 percent of respondents consider those with straight teeth to be more trustworthy than those with crooked teeth.
Invisalign for a Gorgeous Smile
While assessing another person according to their teeth may be unfair and inaccurate, aesthetics-oriented cultural values have become ubiquitous. The truth is, though, that very few of us are born with perfect teeth. Most of us need to undergo some kind of straightening treatment. For those lucky enough to live in the 21st century, attaining the smile you desire no longer comes with the burden of a handful of metal wires and brackets. Instead, Invisalign can straighten your teeth with a clear, concealed aligner that can be removed before eating, brushing your teeth, and even for important events.
